OLED (short for Organic Light Emitting Diode) is a new kind of display technology that promises alot for the future. I'll skip the explanations on how they work exactly, you can Googlepedia it up if your interested. What I can tell you however is that other than having superior image quality and reduced power consumption, it's main advantage (for me) is the ability (both current and projected) to print arrays of them on many different surfaces; uneven ones, curved onces, etc.
This last quality is by itself totaly revolutionary; obviously right? On a video featured on Sony's current OLED tv page, two reviewers talk about this new technology, however the only thing I got out of it was that it would make an awesome Superbowl tv. This somehow bothered me.
My dreams of having large seamless OLED displays in public areas were shattered when I thought to myself that maybe the target audience for the product is flawed. I don't want us to watch the news (or sport events for that matter) on OLEDs. I feel it would be a waste of precious organic pixels.
I would much rather see more clever and artistic uses of the technology, ads included. I want to see my Diet Crush bottle tell me when its flat. I want to see a shirt that changes color as I walk down this OLED coverred spiral staircase. I want to go down the subways escalator and be submerged in a new visual world.
I want OLEDs everywhere, but please don't confine them to rectangular boxes.
